Sound for the Stage
Cybercourse
University of South Florida, Tampa
Instructor: Dr. Patrick Finelli
This course is designed to provide a basic understanding of equipment, systems and procedures for creating and modifying sound in the theatre. The list of topics provides the information you need to become familiar with each component used in sound recording and playback. The student will learn valuable techniques of mixing, editing and enhancing stage sound in these pages, but there should also be an opportunity for "hands-on" experience with actual components. Most topics include a "Practicum" in order to gain proficiency with audio components. We recommend that you use your own equipment or arrange for access to sound equipment in your theatre or school. Practical sessions will develop competence and confidence in the proper operation of the sound studio. The objective is to become skilled in sound mixing, recording and reinforcement. Students will also learn how to develop a conceptual approach to the design of sound, establish levels, select appropriate sound effects from a CD library and create a sound plot. Sound system design, acoustics and production communication are also covered in this course.
