A sound designer is not alone in this world. There are many resources that provide useful information and experience for beginners and pros alike. It is also useful to know what new equipment is available, and what fellow designers are doing. So, here are a few sites that can provide a wealth of information. Most sound magazines provide information concerning new products, and inforomation on concert and theatre tours. They also usually devote a large segment of their pages to studio sound work, which is always good to know about. The greatest thing about sound magazines though is that they may give you a free subscription if they feel you are qualified, so it might be worth it to find out. The Theatre-Sound Mailing List is the best place online for getting information on sound for theatrical performances. It is a listserv that every kind of soundman subscribes to, from high school to Broadway, so you'll see conversations ranging from the inner workings of state-of-the-art mixers to surveys about wireless mic preferences, and everything else, too. Most problems that a sound engineer can run into have been discussed here, so searching through the archives can often yield positive results. Full Compass is a catalog oriented toward the audio market, including musicians, recording engineers, lighting, and live sound reinforcement. This can be a good place to get familiar with what's available, and as a supplier. Any sound person needs at least one reference book to look up sound-related facts every once in a while. Beside the standard Backstage Handbook, engineers might want to get the Sound Reinforcement Handbook, published by Yamaha. It should cost around $30.00 at a local bookstore, or you can get it at Amazon. © Copyright 2001 by Jesse Gamble. All rights reserved.
