Every sound designer needs the ability to create tailored sounds for theatrical productions. If we were living in a perfect world, every theatre would come equipped with a state-of-the-art studio, complete with digital mixing consoles and racks upon racks of fx processors. Of course, most designers have a computer. So it is necessary to get software that will do as much as a full studio would. Editors are the most important piece of software for a designer, so here are some good ones. Multi-track software lets a designer mix sounds together, creating more complex cues. Converters are useful in that they allow a designer to use sound from any source on the web, regardless of format. Rippers can turn CD's into sound files that can be edited or archived. Also listed are sound programs that might be of some use to a designer that don't fit in the other categories.
